I love it when my work and family life intersect, and my latest 4th of July series for Celebrations.com does just that. Rather than put my thinking hat on, I asked the children to recipe develop, take over the kitchen and then play stylist, capturing the experience on camera…to be honest it should be their name on the series, because all I did was act as the sugar police when their sweet imaginations took a turn towards the outrageous.
After a week of discussing the menu, they each took a turn at creating 5 yummy kitchen crafts and family friendly 4th of July party foods, adding their own trademark taste to each and every recipe. Every time you see a strawberry, that would be Margeaux and her devotion to healthy eating and fresh fruit, frosting accents are almost 100% the work of my darling Xander who has a sweet tooth that would rival Willie Wanka, and those marshmallows are the sign that Sawyer was involved. While not wholly nutritious, they are all tested by the little chefs in our kitchen, require little to no supervision and can be made with little to no time at all. Rather than have me tell you all about them, the children, wanted to tell you how fabulous they are…..
Flag Cookie Kitchen Craft “This is so much fun to make, but be sure to have plenty of fresh fruit on hand because not everyone likes a pile of sugar on their cookies” - Margeaux, 9 years old
Yankee Doodle Push Pop ”Every party needs a cake, and I like mine in a cup so I can play and eat cake at the same time” -Xander, 4 years old
Child Friendly S’more “The bigger the marshmallow the better, you can add more things to a big marshmallow” – Sawyer, 7 years old
Fruit Punch Ice Cream Float ”Fruit punch is the best and when you serve it with ice cream it makes it creamy, and the sprinkles make it look really pretty when you serve it” – Margeaux, 9 years old
Frozen Fruit Salad: ”Freezing the fruit makes it taste like a popsicle, which is good because it can get hot when you are at a party playing, but the ice cups can melt so you have to eat it fast.” -Xander, 4 years old
